9/22/2017 0 Comments back from the brinkby SHAENA TOSSCOBBLE (lisa s.) 19-22 SS19 Springswell, 1 A.E. I’ve been cooped up at the Black River Tavern for over a week. I had watched adventurers come in and go out, but no one seemed to need a perky halfling among their party. And so, I practiced my trade, learning a few new tricks along the way. One evening, the innkeeper Hurlee took me aside and rewarded my day’s work with some of her own private reserve Helles. It seems she is quite the brewer. The ale was certainly a step above anything coming from the Albannic region these days. On another day, I was commiserating with Feinthald about the trials of being a bard. He’s really not so bad a man if you can overlook his blatant lack of talent and overstated self-importance. He told me of a story he learned from a mad halfling named Pascale. Pascale told of a portal the Feywilde plane to the north in the marshes of the Black River region. It opened only during high summer. From the way he described Pascale, I question the truth of this rumor. But it was enough to bring Feinthald to this backwater tavern in the hopes of finding adventurers who would take him to the portal when the season was right. I wasn’t the only one spending time in the Tavern though. Along the way I met Liam Buckham, another half-elf of Diwata heritage. He is known as a researcher on control of magical arts. Something about him reminds me of a tale I once heard of a young child whose soul was sold to a demon. Over time, he lost control of the power within him, killing his parents. Could this be that child? I can’t help but worry what will happen when he is called on to cast spells in the field. I also met a stout halfling, clad head to heal in heavy armor and bristling with weapons. He has a reputation among the fishermen and ship crew for slaying a pirate captain.

9/20/2017 0 Comments into the swampby shaena tosscobble (lisa. s) 1-9 ss1 Springswell 1 A.E. And so, I embarked upon my exploration. My friend Lindir invited me to join him in heading up the Black River helping another elf Tharrus find wood to harvest for Sanctus. They brought with them a rather mousy young gnome named Glin. Knowing we were headed to a bayou full of bugs, I stocked up Diwata-crafted mesh hoods, and took to the ship. 7 Springswell 1 A.E. After a week at sea, we arrived at Black River Island. I worried for Lindir. His memories of this swamp put him on edge. I tried to use my songs to calm him, but I didn't know if it would be enough once we were deep into the marshes. When we disembarked, we were greeted by Dougal Ainsley, a big, greasy human, who seems to run the tiny island outpost. The ramshackle camptown stood among the reeds and rot-soaked trees on a small island at the edge of the marsh. The brazier atop the lighthouse burned bright against the coming darkness. A half orc mercenary named Sactonel runs the outfitters where we took on our final provisions. Lindir knew her, and she invited us into the tavern for a drink. The bar was chilly and damp. A single matronly barmaid named Hurlee Lackey scuttled among the tables, bringing ale to the travelers. Sactonel told us that she and her logging crew have faced troubles further up the river to the northeast. Bullywugs have forced her to fight to protect her crew. She has killed 7 since Lindir left for Sanctus. 9/17/2017 0 Comments the ruins & fallen friendsby QUINZLI'S (lex) 1-3SSTLDR: Exploring ruins 2 days south of Verloren. Letter from Quinzli of the Scale, dispatched by sea from Verloren to Black River. To Eilis Gilrin, Greetings and blessings to the sister of my friend. It is my fondest wish that our initial contact could be on better terms. It pains me to inform you that Astrid fell yesterday, along with the entirety of our party save myself. It is by no small miracle that I survived to inform you, and since I was overcome before Astrid, awaking hours later, I can only assume it was by grace of her actions that I am alive to write to you. I am therefore indebted to you and your family. We traveled the road west of Verloren, investigating rumors from homesteaders of curious ruins. Astrid was ever at the forefront of our wanderings, befriending whomever she could and diligently investigating many curious ruins along the way. Her work is a lasting foothold on the mysteries of this new land, and you may rest assured that it has survived and will continue. Though I am suspicious of such platitudes, it is undeniably true that Astrid fell pursuing her greatest love; unraveling the mysteries of ancient structures, texts, and civilizations. She lies at the threshold of a crypt dedicated to a powerful Demon Walker, whose infernal guardians were disturbed by our expedition’s investigations. I intend to recover her remains for proper rites at the earliest opportunity. I have enclosed several of Astrid’s effects which may provide some small comfort. Her spellbook, diary, and a third book whose nature I do not know. In accordance with her wishes, I have read none of them, but if she left any instructions or requests which might apply to yours truly, I am at your disposal. Finally, Eclipse, your ancestral longsword. Her powerful spirit honored its legacy. Astrid was a good friend, with a bright mind and a curious soul. I will miss her greatly. If you wish to visit Verloren to investigate this matter, all of my maps and notes will be available. To that end, I am ever your servant, and wish you speed and fortune on all paths you care to travel. Yours in mourning, -Quinzli of the Scale Quinzli’s journal, entry numbered 1,132. Written on a fresh page with better penmanship than usual. Death continues to follow me. I returned from the exploratory trip south of Verloren alone. My companions, Cylow, Vystri, and poor Astrid lie dead in an ancient Tiefling’s tomb. I would be with them, were it not for some strange quirk of fate rousing me from unconsciousness. Astrid and I were defending Starting from the beginning. After sleeping in the ruins where the goblins made their camp, we proceeded west. There were indeed curious ruins, as the homesteaders said. But nothing immediately obvious. An incredibly clear pool of water north of the path, with water flowing in from the marsh and no outlet except a visible cave mouth. A large mound with a wide metal door, inscribed with a circle pierced by 8 arrows pointed outward from the center, like a sunburst. Not a familiar symbol. After investigating the door, which surprised me by presenting no magical aura whatsoever, we could not determine a way to open it, and descended the hill in search of other options. There is a second cave further down the hill, and we speculated that the underwater cave we found might also lead somewhere behind the door. 9/14/2017 0 Comments A Familiar (SUmmerport)by salazar (Paul) date unknownWell, Salazar had an adventurous day. after talking to the smith in Kegrove about an order, he rented a boat and traveled east, to find himself a new animal companion. Arriving in the morning, he set up camp and set off to make traps for food and hopefully hide. Looking for droppings and seed shells, he was finally able to find a suitable spot for waiting for his prey. With his tail wrapped around the tree, his claws dug in the trunk, he waits. A few hours pass by and he sees a rustling. It is a band of what look to be like Tigerfolk, "lychathropes" he mutters to himself. He waits for them to pass by, luckily he goes unnoticed. He continues to wait until finally his prey has come. A smaller bird of prey, with a red stripe down his back, just like him, this will be the perfect companion. Though instead of trying to capture the animal by normal means, he decides to speak with it. He is able to convince the bird of his strength, his wisdom, and his honor. This creature decides to join Salazar on his quest with the promise of seeing all the skies in the world. 9/13/2017 0 Comments bandit eradication for new cadeni
“A few hours down the road, we saved some kids that were petrified by a cockatrice. Had to put down a giant weasel nest near them. Met some kind of herbalist when we returned her kids to her. Could be good for the Company to work out a deal with her. She gave us these berries that saved our hides. Jelessa, I think? Anyway, seems we’ll probably need to figure out cockatrice migration patterns if we don’t want traders made of stone lining the roads.”
Zorak breaks to take a long draw from his tankard. “About two days along the trade route is when we came across the bandits that Svetleah sent us to find. It's an area with a bridge and cliff face, great for ambush. Two bandits came rappelling down the cliff, four crossbowmen. We tried to reason with them, but they were hard pressed to kick the hornet's nest.” “Malmiir here killed one, we took another with us. Rhogar scared off some of the crossbowmen before we made the choice to report back." “I think you can find Famor in the pen here in Verloren. Seems he's regretted ever getting involved with bandits because he told us everything. Although, losing a hand can do that too,” Zorak let's loose a deep laugh as the messenger’s jaw drops and he goes a little pale. “Anyway, just 2 hours south from that bridge where they ambushed us, he said there’s a fortress garrisoned with about a dozen men. Led by a guy named <Starts with F>. We’re regrouping now to relaunch the expedition to claim the fortress for Cadeni and put these bandits to rest.” Zorak drains the rest of his tankard and looks to the group. “So who’s buying next round?” |
