TLDR: Five days leading up to the ultimate hag showdown, we ran six assaults throughout the week leading up to Feb. 17 - from attacking the hags in their lairs, to defending Black River Island, and finally escorting the firbolg clan to Griphon's Roost. On Feb. 17, 20 players and 2 DMs converged for a 9-hour session to close out a major plot point. Three tactical squads (melee, range, and blended) deployed to take on two of the three standing hags, Molly and Midden Heap, at the White Tower, a gateway to the feywild on the night of the full moon. Many fell throughout the battle but we survived and "won" in 6 rounds. Thanks to all who played in the week and day of! (Thank you Lisa S. for recording this on paper as the raid occurred!)
We arrived at the space of the White Tower an hour before sunset. Merelda (through a clairvoyance potion) and the Jinn through his Raven familiar, scouted the tower’s location. The found a variety of 12 bullywugs, frogs, X lizardfolk, 5 Sahaugin, and 4 merrow. Squad 1 advanced. Liam drew the first blood with fire bolt, followed by Liana with an arrow. Kohaku held down the bullywug with a spiked growth. Squad 2 advanced. Squad 3 advanced. Lucretia called for her squad a blessing and called that they leave no one behind. Rhogar summoned a huge snake. Glin jumped on Rhogar’s horse and they rode into the fray. Krolan snuck in from the East side of the fray. Two Deepbreath lizardfolk advanced on the river, disappearing under the water as another squad dove into concealment. Many of the bullywugs tried to move through the spike growth, taking a fair amount of damage and killing 2 and bloodying another. The green hag disappeared from the battlefield. A tree erupted into entangling plants and a blight in the midst of Squad 2. The merrow engaged Krolan with harpoons. The second harpoon pulled him into their clutches. Another squad of Strongclaw lizardfolk advanced on Squad 2 and threw javelins at Koltalon. He knocked one aside but another struck him. Squad 1 advanced further. Shaena and Kohaku struck the Blight as Brea attempted to cast control water from a scroll. Instead she created a fog cloud along the river. Squad 2 Liam used a twinned scorching ray, causing a beam of fire to boil away the blight. Jinn cast dragon breath on Udoroth and then used acid splash on the Strongclaw lizardfolk near Koltalon. Koltalon advanced on the Strongclaw lizardfolk. He drew Autumn Fury & Summer’s Breath. They sung to him and he smashed them together to create an arcane longsword with smoke rising from the blade: Firestorm. Merelda cast sacred flame. Roscoe and Bennie shot short bows into the Strongclaw lizardfolk. Squad 3 Krolan engaged with the Merrow. Vincentos tried to cross the river and was attacked by the two Deepbreath swimming lizardfolk. He cast hellish rebuke and killed the first. Lucretzia cast sacred flame on the remaining river-lizardfolk, but missed. Rhogar and Glin rode forward on his horse and tried to trample the Strongclaw lizardfolk. Tormund tolled the dead and then dove into the river. Glin did acid splash on the Deepbreath lizardfolk.

With a sigh, Kohaku laid his head gently on the wooden table. “This place is so confusing,” he said with a sigh. When he’d woken up this morning, he had expected it to be cold. And it was. In fact, during his prayers and meditation, he’d divined that this cold was truly unnatural. He’d expected to inspect the obelisk again. The party he’d joined—Theobold, Fagan, Blizkin, Mindartis, Ivan, and Tharrus—had attempted to look at the inscriptions. But for some reason, when they had approached the obelisk that morning, the inscriptions had gone. I’m just glad I could help. Thinking about how he’d seen the obelisk before, he had reasoned the lack of moonlight might have been the reason for the lack of carvings. Praying to Selûne, Kohaku had asked her to shine down her glorious moonlight. Doing so revealed the ancient writing once more. Some rubbings had been taken, and it proved that the obelisk’s secrets could only be discovered on a moonlit night. That night, in fact, a shaft of moonlight had illuminated the western portion of the obelisk. Theobold had managed to memorize it. Hopefully it reveals more about the battle between good and evil that those carvings supposedly discuss. Kohaku was tired. He’d had to cast many spells that day, most of them as the party had returned from trying to make contact with the human settlement in East Summerport (or Winterport—every faction called this place something else). Two ghouls had been feasting on…something, in one of the previously cleared buildings right across the street from the tavern. With Blizkin’s grease, some fae lights and Kenku illusions, Kohaku’s spikes, and enough fire to burn down an entire forest, the ghouls had been put down. Shaking his head, Kohaku rubbed his eyes and smiled slightly. “At least Blizkin was able to douse the flames before any permanent damage could ensue.” With a dull thunk, a mug of ale was put in front of him. He took a sip, swirling the foamy liquid. “Tilith, huh,” he muttered. That morning, before setting off, some of his compatriots’ ale kept disappearing. Kohaku may still have been getting used to his newly-enhanced hearing, but it had proved its worth when he’d caught the ale thief whispering. As the thief attempted to escape into the crowd, Kohaku managed to grasp them with his Thorn Whip. As the thief was reeled in, the magic they had used to conceal themselves seemed to dissipate. A young human girl had appeared, wearing a necklace set with rubies and sapphires. She had introduced herself as Tilith, a member of the Fist. She had told them of the group of humans coming to meet with the party tomorrow. She also revealed that her necklace kept her protected, in part, from the unearthly cold the land shivered under. Maybe when the meeting with the Fist’s Treaters happened, they could figure out some way of trading for these necklaces. We’ll have to make sure there’s enough ale on hand, Kohaku thought, with another sip. Tilith had gone through…seven? Eight? An inordinately large number of mugs before she’d left. I wonder what the deal with her father is, though. The party had encountered Tilith before they’d left for the obelisk. But another meeting awaited them after the rubbings were done. The embassy on the shard’s northeastern edge had been locked; Kohaku rubbed at his bruised shoulder. But walking to the courtyard on the side further into town, they’d found some doors. They’d also found two white rabbits, dressed in clothes that befitted nobility. The rabbits had scrolls in their mouths, but upon spotting the group, they’d promptly dropped them into the snow, and run inside, splitting up along the way. Standing outside the door, Theobold and Kohaku performed the rituals necessary for them to speak with the rabbits. Meanwhile, Mendartis had sent his familiar upwards, inspecting the rest of the building. The embassy had turned out to be three stories tall, with a pleasure area on the roof. The rest of the group had inspected the rabbits’ scrolls, but they were blank. 12/7/2017 0 Comments The First Night in Summerportby Kohaku Ruim (Matt S.) 7 of Spring FellTL;DR: Kohaku travels from Black River Island to the frozen island of Summerport. The borrowed staff clattered to the ground. Kohaku stood swaying, all his muscles and joints loose from shock. He felt weak, queasy, and colder than even the wind’s bitter chill could make him. After all this time, he’d found a link. A solid lead. He’d found someone with the mark of the black hand on their shoulder. He must have missed it in the dark. But why did it have to be him? His mother, whose staff he’d lost--we’ve been over this! he thought furiously to himself—his mother, the one who’d taught him about the gods he now served. His mother, who had only wanted to help the sick and wounded. His mother, dead and buried, a black hand bruised into her shoulder. He’d tracked all over Sanctus, he’d searched at the Black River (THERE IS MORE THERE THAN MEETS THE EYE, the voice of his gods thundered in his mind), and his quest had taken him here, to the frozen town of Summerport. Why did it have to be him? 11/10/2017 0 Comments talking with the bees10/6/2017 0 Comments sahuagins & snake filetsby Merelda meznen (Vera d.) 21-23 SSI left Sanctus 7 days ago and arrived at Black River Island earlier today. I met a couple of half-elves like me, except they were half human where I'm half-orc and half-elf. Kohaku Ruim is a young druid, and Liam Buckham, is a few years older. He was poring over scrolls in the tavern when we heard a shriek from the streets. The wife of a fisherman was shouting she was under attack! We ran outside to see what we could do. I saw a creature I had never seen before - scaly man with fins. He seemed to be a fish with legs! Soon a total of five of these fish-men infiltrated the village. Dougal the March Warden ushered the islandfolk to safety while my new friends and I dealt with the attackers. Ultimately, we prevailed although two escaped our deadly blows. Dougal was extremely grateful for our courage and selflessness. We pressed him as to where these creatures could have come from but he didn't really have a good idea. Looking out from the lighthouse upon the swamp and larger island, I asked whether anyone had gone up the coast. He replied, "Sometimes fishermen go up the west coast and never come back." It was then that Liam, Kohaku, and I decided to explore the west coast versus the inland bayou. |
