TLDR: Five days leading up to the ultimate hag showdown, we ran six assaults throughout the week leading up to Feb. 17 - from attacking the hags in their lairs, to defending Black River Island, and finally escorting the firbolg clan to Griphon's Roost. On Feb. 17, 20 players and 2 DMs converged for a 9-hour session to close out a major plot point. Three tactical squads (melee, range, and blended) deployed to take on two of the three standing hags, Molly and Midden Heap, at the White Tower, a gateway to the feywild on the night of the full moon. Many fell throughout the battle but we survived and "won" in 6 rounds. Thanks to all who played in the week and day of! (Thank you Lisa S. for recording this on paper as the raid occurred!)
We arrived at the space of the White Tower an hour before sunset. Merelda (through a clairvoyance potion) and the Jinn through his Raven familiar, scouted the tower’s location. The found a variety of 12 bullywugs, frogs, X lizardfolk, 5 Sahaugin, and 4 merrow. Squad 1 advanced. Liam drew the first blood with fire bolt, followed by Liana with an arrow. Kohaku held down the bullywug with a spiked growth. Squad 2 advanced. Squad 3 advanced. Lucretia called for her squad a blessing and called that they leave no one behind. Rhogar summoned a huge snake. Glin jumped on Rhogar’s horse and they rode into the fray. Krolan snuck in from the East side of the fray. Two Deepbreath lizardfolk advanced on the river, disappearing under the water as another squad dove into concealment. Many of the bullywugs tried to move through the spike growth, taking a fair amount of damage and killing 2 and bloodying another. The green hag disappeared from the battlefield. A tree erupted into entangling plants and a blight in the midst of Squad 2. The merrow engaged Krolan with harpoons. The second harpoon pulled him into their clutches. Another squad of Strongclaw lizardfolk advanced on Squad 2 and threw javelins at Koltalon. He knocked one aside but another struck him. Squad 1 advanced further. Shaena and Kohaku struck the Blight as Brea attempted to cast control water from a scroll. Instead she created a fog cloud along the river. Squad 2 Liam used a twinned scorching ray, causing a beam of fire to boil away the blight. Jinn cast dragon breath on Udoroth and then used acid splash on the Strongclaw lizardfolk near Koltalon. Koltalon advanced on the Strongclaw lizardfolk. He drew Autumn Fury & Summer’s Breath. They sung to him and he smashed them together to create an arcane longsword with smoke rising from the blade: Firestorm. Merelda cast sacred flame. Roscoe and Bennie shot short bows into the Strongclaw lizardfolk. Squad 3 Krolan engaged with the Merrow. Vincentos tried to cross the river and was attacked by the two Deepbreath swimming lizardfolk. He cast hellish rebuke and killed the first. Lucretzia cast sacred flame on the remaining river-lizardfolk, but missed. Rhogar and Glin rode forward on his horse and tried to trample the Strongclaw lizardfolk. Tormund tolled the dead and then dove into the river. Glin did acid splash on the Deepbreath lizardfolk.

10/31/2017 0 Comments to the midden heapby Lindir Balaeth mitore (Jacob b.) 5 - 7 hsTLDR: Lindir and members of Shield trek into the bayou to find the Midden Heap and instead stumble upon the Greatscale Clan. (Session date: 10/14 and 10/31 combined) 5th of High Spring After several days of training and honing my combat skills. I sat in the Black River Tavern drinking my problems away. I looked over and saw a large golden dragonborn adorned in plate armor and carrying a formidable great sword. After thinking long and hard I recognized the face of the dragonborn from that tragic day when I lost all of my brothers on the battlefield. I haven’t seen Udoroth since that day and it was nice to see a familiar face. Shortly after a sturdy, young half orc female walked in looking way too cheery for my liking, and she had a funny accent. Followed shortly after her, a skinny looking wizard and another familiar face; I thought Koltalon died at Providence with the rest of his unit but he made it out. He’s always been resilient as much as he is honorable. I’d go into battle with anyone from the Shield. After chatting with the former members of the Shield I decided to take part in the adventure to clear this so called “Midden Heap” to restore balance to the bayou. Our party departed Black River and began heading North towards where the Midden Heap was rumored to be. A short way into our journey we encountered a bullywug scout; I stealthily dispatched him with one shot from my longbow Dol Feredir (Head Hunter). A group of bullywugs noticed I split one of their warriors in half and blew their conch horn for reinforcements from Providence I’m assuming and attacked us. Our party dispatched them with ease and continued forward into the bayou. 10/31/2017 0 Comments A way out of the bayouby merelda meznen (vera d.) 5-9 hsTL;DR: Merelda, the young half-orc cleric, joins Shield to locate and destroy the Midden Heap. Instead they discover a thriving lizardfolk village of Clan Greatscale outside of the bayou. The party earns the favor and respect of Chief Atuji and learn there are hills and plains beyond the bayou. (Note: Clan Greatscale is a point of light...for now.) 5 Highspring - Bullywugs Attack! After returning from my last expedition into the bayou, I met a great dragonborn paladin by the name of Udoroth. His reputation is well known around the Island - he leads Shield and has defeated many foes in the field. I accepted his invitation to trek into the bayou in search of a creature he and his comrades, Lindir and Koltalon, keep calling the "Midden Heap." I thought they were referring to garbage but they keep referring to it as a person, particularly a witch of some sort. My new friend, Liam, joined us, and we left Black River Island, headed northeast. It wasn't too long that we were ambushed by bullywugs during the night. Ultimately we prevailed and Liam called my warhammer "Bonecrusher." It has a nice ring to it, so that is what I shall call my best weapon going forward. Father would be pleased. 6 - 7 Highspring - Clan Greatscale We continued east and fortunately avoided a sorrel's nesting grounds. However, we got lost and I shimmied up a tree to determine where to go. I had smelled smoke and from the tree's high vantage, I saw smoke rising up. If Midden Heap is garbage, maybe that was the way. Instead, we ended up coming upon a small tower guarded by eight lizardfolk. 10/6/2017 0 Comments sahuagins & snake filetsby Merelda meznen (Vera d.) 21-23 SSI left Sanctus 7 days ago and arrived at Black River Island earlier today. I met a couple of half-elves like me, except they were half human where I'm half-orc and half-elf. Kohaku Ruim is a young druid, and Liam Buckham, is a few years older. He was poring over scrolls in the tavern when we heard a shriek from the streets. The wife of a fisherman was shouting she was under attack! We ran outside to see what we could do. I saw a creature I had never seen before - scaly man with fins. He seemed to be a fish with legs! Soon a total of five of these fish-men infiltrated the village. Dougal the March Warden ushered the islandfolk to safety while my new friends and I dealt with the attackers. Ultimately, we prevailed although two escaped our deadly blows. Dougal was extremely grateful for our courage and selflessness. We pressed him as to where these creatures could have come from but he didn't really have a good idea. Looking out from the lighthouse upon the swamp and larger island, I asked whether anyone had gone up the coast. He replied, "Sometimes fishermen go up the west coast and never come back." It was then that Liam, Kohaku, and I decided to explore the west coast versus the inland bayou. 9/22/2017 0 Comments back from the brinkby SHAENA TOSSCOBBLE (lisa s.) 19-22 SS19 Springswell, 1 A.E. I’ve been cooped up at the Black River Tavern for over a week. I had watched adventurers come in and go out, but no one seemed to need a perky halfling among their party. And so, I practiced my trade, learning a few new tricks along the way. One evening, the innkeeper Hurlee took me aside and rewarded my day’s work with some of her own private reserve Helles. It seems she is quite the brewer. The ale was certainly a step above anything coming from the Albannic region these days. On another day, I was commiserating with Feinthald about the trials of being a bard. He’s really not so bad a man if you can overlook his blatant lack of talent and overstated self-importance. He told me of a story he learned from a mad halfling named Pascale. Pascale told of a portal the Feywilde plane to the north in the marshes of the Black River region. It opened only during high summer. From the way he described Pascale, I question the truth of this rumor. But it was enough to bring Feinthald to this backwater tavern in the hopes of finding adventurers who would take him to the portal when the season was right. I wasn’t the only one spending time in the Tavern though. Along the way I met Liam Buckham, another half-elf of Diwata heritage. He is known as a researcher on control of magical arts. Something about him reminds me of a tale I once heard of a young child whose soul was sold to a demon. Over time, he lost control of the power within him, killing his parents. Could this be that child? I can’t help but worry what will happen when he is called on to cast spells in the field. I also met a stout halfling, clad head to heal in heavy armor and bristling with weapons. He has a reputation among the fishermen and ship crew for slaying a pirate captain. |
