In the days following the Sahaugin attack on Black River Island, I came to know two new adventurers. I had met Aredhel, a Drow cleric of Set, back on Sanctus. At the time she had been considering the musical arts. The habit does not seem to have taken hold. I also had the pleasure to meet Herald Theobald Peacekeeper, a cultural preservationist and storyteller from Sanctus. We met at the Black River Tavern together with Glin, the gnome conjurer, to discuss our mutual concern over the Bullywug assaults on the adventurers. Aredhel told of a raid of the nearby Fort Providence, which she had participated in. The fort seems to be a gathering point for the local savage beings. Theobald, too, had been ambushed a week ago. Given his proclivity for diplomacy, the ambassador was able to communicate with one Bullywug by the name of Pulg. He sent Pulg back to his leader, Bullup, with a message of peace. Both Theobold and Aredhel echoed the thoughts Glin and I had shared – that we must find a way to stop these assaults, and that genocide was simply not an option. Together we decided to offer the Bullywugs, through Pulg, a token of peace, in the form of a scarf decorated with copper coins, and request an audience with Bullup. We spent the rest of the day sharing stories and drinks and preparing our offering.
6 HighSpring, 1 A.E. We rented the last two canoes in Sactonel’s supply and headed up the river. As we passed the tributary, we saw an enormous crocodile sunning itself on the stone at the outcropping which Theobald called Croc Rock. He had apparently encountered, and spoken to the beast before. He came prepared with a pail full of fish, which placated the beast and allowed us to pass unharmed. We traveled further along the river’s Western bank for three hours to the site of Theobold’s last ambush. We knew that Fort Providence was east of the river, but we hoped to find a smaller encampment on the other bank. As we pulled the canoes up onto the beach, we could see the bones of the skeletons of his assailants, Bullywug and giant bullfrogs alike, picked clean by the creatures of the swamp. Glin and Aredhel worked together to broadcast the frog-like croak “hello” across the bog, hoping to summon the Bullywugs from where they were hiding, but the bog was quiet. We continued to the northwest, traveling for hours, passing wildlife of all kinds, but still no Bullywugs. At day’s end, the area ahead of us opened up into the standing water of a marsh. In the center, a 15 foot tall crane stood fishing in the comparatively shallow water. Rather than engaging the beautiful beast, we snuck around the edge of the marsh until we found a place to camp in a grove of trees where we would not disturb him. 7 HighSpring, 1 AE I scaled one of the trees, trying to scout for any sign of the Bullywug encampment. Seeing nothing, we looped back to the east to head further up the river and try again. A half mile down a nearby game trail the bog opened up to a wood beyond. Leaning against one of the nearest trees was a giant Sylvan creature dressed in green. His attention was on something further within the wood. I was enraptured with the giant’s beautiful form, and I was drawn to it, through the bog. The being heard me coming through the mud and turned in terror at the noise I was generating. It urgently gestured for us to be quiet and get low, shrinking himself into the form of an elf. Through the wood we saw 8 spindly gaunt reptilian humanoids, too thin to be lizardfolk. We laid low and quiet, hiding within the illusory grasses cast by Glin, for what seemed like an hour (but was likely closer to 5 minutes). Finally, the threat withdrew and the Sylvan resumed its giant form, rising elegantly above the team, relaxed. That’s when Aredhel ran forward, passing me, arms wide open to hug the giant. Its eyes opened in terror and it began to bellow in an earth-rumbling sound. Theobald stepped forward and began to speak with the giant in its own tongue. After a time, they began to speak in elven instead, which Aredhel and Glin both spoke. Theobold and the giant, whose name was Dufdor, spoke for quite some time. He learned that Dufdor was one of a race of wardens, committed to protecting the natural order. Dufdor personally was the Watcher of the Southern Waters. He warned Theobold against the hags that inhabit the area, Wicked Pollyfrogwart and her sisters. They seek to control the area through chaos, manipulating the lizardfolk and the Bullywugs to spend their energy against one another. At the end of their conversation, Dufdor told Theobold he needed to speak to his elders, but he promised to come to us again. He said he would meet us on the southern tip of Black River Island on the night of the full moon (14 HighSpring). He then took the form of a gold eagle and flew away. After a tense conversation, we returned to the canoes, only to find them destroyed. Instead we started walking, returning to Black River Island just as the rain began to fall. We gathered around the hearth and discussed what we had heard. Theobold had already covenanted with the Lizardfolk that he would meet with them on the full moon. We agreed that I would find a translator and meet with Dufdor on his behalf and on behalf of the Heralds, since my patron is a member as well. Then we parted ways, until the next adventure.
