The smell of moisture and fish make the bullywug raid on Fort Providence feel like a previous weekend’s affair. The feeling teeters between nostalgia and nightmare… I arrived safely to Black River Island this morning, on a shuttle full of Sanctus citizens from various parts of the island. We were kindly met by March Warden Dougal Ainsley, who welcomed our caravan and showed us to the tavern where we have been graciously given one night’s free stay after our long journey. The Warden and I are familiar, but I felt a bit ashamed shaking his hand as I climbed off the boat. He must think a coward of me. I am grateful to see this island still stands under his leadership. On the passage from Sanctus, I managed to recruit Eilis Gilrin for my quest into the Bayou to reassess the potential occupancy of Fort Providence. She seemed almost too eager, as if she was searching for a distraction. But I could tell by the way she held herself and her great sword as we strolled through the town toward the tavern that she would serve this purpose well. There were two others on our trip to the island that caught my eye who I managed to recruit. First - Aredhel, a drow elf with a constant squint but a knack for healing. And Kiera, a human, teenage girl who I can just tell has an itch for the interesting and unknown. Our campaign is eccentric to say the least, but I certainly cannot go back into the bog alone, so I will make due until a larger presence on the island is established. Oh Hurlee, a friendly face indeed. Hurlee greeted us at the tavern, just as I remembered her. Simple but effective. She may seem mousy, but she will knock you flat on your ass with her steadfast commitment to her trades. With my mouth already thick with the humid air of the bayou, I slammed a quick pint of ale and headed to the shop for provisions. We agreed to set off first thing tomorrow morning. Sanctonal. Oh how glad I am to see you. Sanctonal, a female half-orc and former member of The Shield, greeted us as we entered what appeared to be her shop. Three years had not made her any less attractive. We exchanged quick recaps of our ongoings since the last I was in town, after which I procured two canoes for a gracious price. I do hope we have more time to catch up upon my return. Year 1 - AOE 9th Day of Spring Swell I CANNOT believe I got lost. It must be the blanket of water weighing on my conscious. I cannot allow this type of haphazard behavior to continue if I want my mission to be successful... Eilis, Aredhel, Kiera and myself had left Black River Island at sunrise, just as planned. That early of a start would guarantee we could dock on dry land before the daily downpour of the bayou. Unfortunately, we were not successful. My memory of the bayou was not as solid as I had hoped. I encouraged everyone to paddle a bit harder to correct my mistake, but we were not successful at making it to drier land. We attempted to tie off our boats to some trees just off the marshy shoreline, but the downpour came….and our knots didn’t hold. Could this day get any worse?
Thanks to Eilis’ attuned sense of nature, we managed to correct our course back toward the east and find a gathering of thick foliage. Just as we brought our boats ashore for the night, Kiera goes quiet. “I hear frogs.” Shit. Year 1 - AOE 10th Day of Spring Swell Now I know where I am. Morning came without incident. Aredhel was still exhausted from our attempted sprint to dry land, but we pressed onward toward Fort Providence, south east of our position. As we rounded the bend in the embankment, the site of Fort Providence sprang into view...and so did the sight of bullywugs patrolling the fort. They saw us… We never saw them get into the water, but 20 minutes later, two bullywugs appeared in front of us on the shore. The tinge of PTSD began to surface, but I shook it off and drew my great sword, knowing what was about to happen. Eilis attempted to communicate with them, but they do not speak common. Don’t try to reason with a bullywug. Right there on the beach, we fought them, but not without consequence. Both Aredhel and Kiera were knocked out, but Eilis and myself managed to lay hands, and just in time. As Eils and I finished healing our new friends, we spotted three more bullywugs jump into the water. Glad I have another paladin with me. In our condition, I knew we wouldn’t make it back whole without getting off the ground. Bullywugs can’t jump into trees...can they? I led the party back into the woods and up into the trees. Each of us took our positions high in the trees and waited for the three bullywugs to surface. I shot my long bow at the closest target, with Aredhel’s and Kiera’s bolts following, which brought down the first bullywug easily. The other two bullywugs shifted back into the east waters, but they were still in range of our attacks. We struggled at first to hit them, and Aredhel suffered one hit to the arm with a poisoned arrow. She will never want to help me again after this trip. We eventually started to gain traction. A bullywug hopped into close proximity of the tree Eilis perched in, and she jumped down on his head, bashing it’s skull with her great sword. How is that thing still alive? Both bullywugs continued to attack us, focusing on Eilis. Aredhel also jumped down to find a spear that one of the bullywugs had thrown at Eilis. That left just me and Kiera in the trees. Eventually, both bullywugs retreated into the eastern waters, but that didn’t discourage Eilis from taking one last shot at the one with a thick crack in its skull. A ray of frost blasted through the water and hit the barely breathing bullywug in the back, laying him face first into the water. Let’s get out of here. We picked up our bolts and our egos and ran back to our tied up canoes. We got back into the water and started paddling back to Black River Island, but Kiera spotted three more bullywugs just north of our path. These fuckers can swim. Fast. Paddle harder! Exhaustion hit me like a brick wall, but just as the three bullywugs got close enough to be of concern, a crocodile swooped up from the bayou and snapped down on them. The gods are good. We made it back to Black River Island and the tavern before the nightly downpour, and I proceeded to partake in my own nightly downpour. Hurlee, ale for my friends…
