by Eilis Gilrin (vera d.) 10 Spring fell
TL;DR: Eilis Gilrin, the moon elf paladin, leaves New Cadeni and finds herself on the frozen island of Summerport. She joins a party to exterminate undead, who befriend a wererat, Genji, who works for The Fist. Plus, they accidentally kill his favorite pet, Escobar.
Brother, I thought I was heading straight back to Black River Island to join The Shield's quest in securing the bayou, but my ship took a detour to Summerport (more like Winterport, as it is a frozen tundra). I followed Captain Faladrin to the Thieve's Tankard for a drink. A lizard man named Salazar approached me and asked if I would be interested in joining his party to search for werewolves on the island. He also mentioned there are undead on this island. Ever since Astrid died at the hands of unholy zombies, I have been driven to avenge her death by ridding this world of all undead. So I pledged my support in this campaign.
Northeast of the Tankard is a 500 ft tall obsidian obelisk, as black and shiny as Eclipse and Aqmar, our family's long swords. Salazar said we needed to investigate a house north of the obelisk; it was easy to identify as it has a green door with dwarven runes carved into it. Kresh, a dwarven fighter, deciphered it as "Safe house," but she couldn't open the door. Not satisfied with just trying the front door, I marched to the back and found the rear door to a kitchen unlocked.
Nobody seemed to be home but we found a room upstairs with hashtags that seemed to be an accounting system for something. Number of days? Number of people? I found a door that led to the cellar and discovered a 3 ft tall passageway behind some boxes (which had great claw marks on them). Kresh led the way, while Brynn, I, and Salazar brought up the rear. After a series of turns, we ended up in an octagonal room filled with daylight and a grate at one end. Kresh entered the room and was immediately accosted by a giant rat!
Salazar had been tense and anxious the entire time we were in the underground tunnels and immediately shot the rat dead. That's when we heard a voice exclaim, "You killed Escobar!!" A wererat ran in and knelt before Escobar's corpse, sobbing in grief. The wererat said, "Escobar was only trying to hug you!"
After consoling the wererat, we learned his name was Gengji. He was a dwarf who was freshly turned into a wererat. He works for The Fist, a mostly human organization that seems to be aligned with our mission - to eradicate Summerport of the werewolves and undead.
Genji scouts for The Fist and tracks the number of werewolves on the island. He told us that the werewolves dwell in Widow's Crest. Since we do not have silvered weapons yet, we decided to hold off on approaching Widow's Crest without proper reinforcements. We asked Genji to arrange a meeting four days from today with leaders of the The Fist.
On the way back to the Tankard, we were approached by five undead, one of which was able to get away from us and touch the obelisk to conjure skeletons to fight us. Salazar and Kresh went after the obelisk while Brynn and I faced the four zombies who had surrounded me.
At first I was able to fend them off, but if it weren't for Brynn's amazing reflexes, I wouldn't have been able to deflect the bludgeoning blows of the undead. I found it peculiar that this paladin was using a short whip and a torch as his weapons. Mid-battle I cried out to him, "Why don't you fight with a sword?!" to which he replied,"Because I have none."
I told him to grab Eclipse from my back and he wielded our sister's long sword a bit unsteady at first but he got the hang of it after a few tries. We ultimately prevailed over the undead and skeletons. Praise be to Corellon. I do have to give some credit to Brynn's god, Gaia. (I thought he was bonkers when I first met him, but he saved me on the battlefield today.)
I am resting up in Summerport and may stay a few weeks to help Salazar, Brynn, and Kresh clear the island.
I hope to see you soon. Keep me posted on your progress with the animal sanctuary and Shield. I cannot wait to reunite with Udoroth and the rest of the company.
