by koltalon (Alex P.) 21-25 ssI have spent several weeks here on Black Marsh Island meditating, and trying to recover my memories before I felt ready to reenter those black marshes. After waiting for the right opportunity, I joined a pair of adventurers looking to explore the western swamps. My memory is hazy and full of fevered visions, but my aim was to rediscover that magnificant sylvan tower where I had recoverd after the fall of Ft. Providence. Namfoodle the brash and Heykitd the ever-talking had their own motivations for adventuring, but they seemed to be apt fighters and proved themselves traversing the swamplands, though their very personalities were a great test of my patience. I think I need to recenter my mind and body before travelling with two bards again. We traveled up the river and to the west, passing several landmarks we had heard about in the tavern. A dwarven trail blaze leading to drinking water and a stone trail marker carved in some unknown language. As the river turned south we spotted our trailhead, a magnificant pale oak with perfectly symmetrical bifurcating branches centered in a calm pool. We pulled our canoes out of the river and set up camp for the night. During my watch in the night, a silver haired woman appeared to commune with the tree and approached me. I learned her name was Pollen and that she was a protector spirit of the region. She made an offer that if I was able to cleanse the blight from the midden heap far to the east, I would be rewarded with the knowledge I sought. I thanked her for the opportunity to bring balance to the marshland and promised to prevent my fellow adventurers from felling her unique oak tree. We followed a western oriented game trail for miles before coming to a large, almost perfectly circular clearing in a region of high ground with many trees. A ring of large mushrooms was centered in the clearing and Namfoodle detected a strong presence of conjuration magic. Meditating within the ring brought nightmarish flashbacks from my earlier ordeal and the lingering image of a fey face within the fairy ring. Heykitd's dwarven intuition proved that the foundation of a great tower once stood in this location and we began experimenting to summon the structure from its hiding place. Our "experiments" lead to colerful, albeit distorted visual hallucinations and a general feeling of euphoria, but did not reveal a path to the tower. Additionally, during this period some irridescent rainbow-scaled bipeds that communicated with a series of whistles and some new language eyed us from the edge of the clearing. None of our party was sure of their existance until a great bellow from the west grabbed their attention and they ran off.
We pursued the lizard-like creatures west, through many miles of marshland and swamp pools. At one point the trail lead straight through a massive webbed structure and we were in fact attacked by a large, and hungry arachnid. While Heykitd was momentarily ensnared, a few well placed darts and a brilliant flash of dancing lights were enough for us to make our escape. I was unable to pick up the trail after the spider nest, but while heading in a general westerly direction we heard sounds of conflict and the dreadful bellows of bullywugs. It was on another western headed game trail that we encountered the lizardfolk again. They seemed defensive, but did not attack us. I wanted to help, but some strong non-verbal communication told me that they did not want it. Another loud bellow and they turned and disappeared down the trail. Following carefully, with our weapons drawn we encountered a gruesome sight: A large bullywug village, filled with scenes of violence as lizard and frog fought viscously against each other. Suprisingly, that old scoundral Fagen was spotted crawling in the mud towards on of the rear dwellings. I'm ashamed at the pride I felt to see him in such a degrading position, but glad that he has survived whatever ordeal brought him here. I lept into action fighting against the bullywugs and helping the lizardfolk where I could. They seemed perplexed by my actions, but took advantage where they could and soon the tide of battle was changing. I think Heykitd was stunned by the sight at first, but lent a fighting hand as well. Namfoodle reconnected with his friend Fagen who warned us to make our escape. At that point a massive feathered raptor emerged from the largest cypress tree I'd ever seen on the far side of the village, bearing a being who at first reminded me of Pollen, but truly seemed to be a corrupted and ghastly vision of the woodland spirit I had met. We left the battlefield with haste, and eventually made our way through the swamp back to our canoes. We were running short on rations and I think we all learned a thing or two about foraging for food in these lands. One last note, the stone outcropping where a tributary joins the river continues to be haunted by that massive gator. A few harsh words, a dart, and a sleep spell allowed us safe passage back to Black River Island. I think the bullywugs are beyond reasoning with as they attack our parties at every opportuinty. The lizardfolk are aggressive beings to be sure, but I am willing to join the party and attempt negotiations. Maybe we can bring them some sort of sign of our goals of friendship?
