3/10/2018 0 Comments Meet Vengir Duskhallowby Vengir (Jim W)“Gather close and listen to my harrowing tale of adventure and the heroic deeds of yours truly, Vengir Duskhallow, Master Archer!” “I decided to leave Black River Island. The kobolds there are too feeble for one such as myself. I needed a tougher game. Rumors of Far Reach drew my attention and I set out for new adventures. The journey was a mere ten days and I made friends with a half orc that was looking for adventure as well. His name was Baluff.” “Baluff was green, and I don’t mean his skin, no. I’m referring to his skill as an adventurer. He had not yet set foot on a real quest, but I decided to keep an eye on the big fella. He’d need a skilled companion if he was to survive.” “We found ourselves in the local watering hole where we met a gnome with a strange way of speaking. He seems to think everyone is his brother; even the females. I thought, perhaps, he was blind, or simple, but neither were the case. He simply likes to refer to everyone as his ‘bro.’” “The bro-centric gnome went by the name Basil. He was under a form of house-arrest, but a member of some group called the Epoch, a giant woman named Kela, vouched for the strange gnome and we overheard them talking about an adventure to help a local alchemist locate some missing items. We volunteered naturally.” “The gnome regaled us with past adventures and how it seems they all go horribly wrong. My friend Baluff touched searing hot metal while we were getting supplies at the smithy. He burned his hand and I was starting to question whether venturing out with these folk was a wise decision.” “Within the fortification, a druid loitered around a fountain with various animals. The druid allowed us to drink and the waters gave us a strange vitality. I have never felt anything like it before, but it felt great. The water healed Baluff’s burns.” “We set out and it was a long while before we could see the pits, our destination, in the distance. Standing near them was a group of figures, but we were too far to make out whether they were friend or foe. We devised a plan to get closer and I volunteered, naturally, to scout ahead, but the gnome had other plans. He decided to attempt to climb a tree. Key word here is ‘attempt.’” “The gnome only made it a short distance before falling. Baluff acted quickly to catch the gnome, but made a great deal of noise in the process. “If I had only trusted my instincts.” “The ground began to stir a short distance away and from the earth clambered a golem creature of some sort. It appeared to be made of rock and crystal (we later learned it was salt), but the fight was on.” “The beast hurled a massive clod and struck Basil. Being naturally quick to act, I pulled the gnome to safety behind the tree where he could tend to his injuries before continuing the fight.” “My companions prefer to fight up close, but having a mind for tactics, I used the tree for cover and delivered lethal blow after lethal blow with my crossbow. The fight was grueling, but we stood firm even after the five bugbears joined the fight.” “Everyone fought well and we defeated our foes, but everyone was badly hurt. Well everyone but the tactically superior. I remained unscathed, but not everyone has my expertise in battle.” “There wasn’t a moment to rest as we heard a woman’s voice calling for help. It was coming from the pit, but we had heard the rumors of the drowning maiden, Zinamaris. It was her voice that called and Baluff was caught by her spell. He wanted to go to her, but we stopped him.” “When the creature learned that we were not falling for her trap, she rose from the muddy water, being lifted by her hair. On her back was a short bow that glistened as if it were made of ice.” “It wouldn’t speak with the males of the party and would only talk with Kela, but the creature only seemed to want to drown us. A most unacceptable proposal. She also wanted us to bring her some apple, but the only thing I want to give her is a crossbow bolt to the eye. Unfortunately, with the injuries and fatigue of my companions, this will have to be a fight for another day and we left her with her petty threats.” “We ventured a distance away and made camp in the woods to the north. We had heard rumors of a howling there and wanted to check it out.” “I offered to take the first and longest watch, as I didn’t require as much recovery. I heard strange noises; like creaking bones. I stayed alert. The sounds never got close, but I could tell they were moving. Baluff took the other watch and he heard the same sounds.” “In the morning, we began moving again and it wasn’t long before we found trouble. Two putrid undead, known as ghasts, attacked. My companions fought in close as I remained at a distance. These monsters are vicious and put up a fight, but I managed to end one with a well placed shot and my companions finished the other.” “I could have gone longer, but my companions needed real downtime and we headed back to Cavalier’s Watch.” “Remember children, fight smarter and the nasties won’t get you.” “I think I heard one of your parents calling your name and that Dragonborn, Remeth, seems to be giving me a sideways glance as I talk to a group a children.” “You all best scatter. Now get out of here, I’ll have more stories for you soon, I swear.”
