BY Sigrunn (Adam F.)I came to BRI recently after leaving Sanctus and my temple to bring the words of my goddess to the people of Black River Island and the surrounding communities. Upon my arrival I was directed to Fort Providence as the Island is still uninhabitable for civilized beings.
At the fort I came across a party of adventures who had recently returned from a mission to rescue a lost friend. They were a melancholy group as the cost of their rescue had been the lives of three of those who joined in the mission. One of those adventurers had been committed to a scouting mission the following day, a druid named Jerwyn, as their healer. I chose to join the party in scouting the location of Giants to the north. I travelled with some people familiar with the area, a pair of wood elves Liana a Ranger and Scaro a Monk. There was also a dwarf named Krolan, another Ranger. I came here to avoid my people as they shunned me growing up but my interactions with him were good so maybe my odd appearance will be accepted out here. There was also to be a human Barbarian with us but something prevented his arrival in time to join us. The dwarf took us north for a day where we encountered a village of lizardfolk that he was familiar with. We were welcomed in, I will say that it was a good thing that I went as the lizardfolk spoke the language of Dragons and I was the only one who knew it. We met their leader, called Dol’kal and asked him for updates about the area and explained our reasons for being there. After him we were directed to the local Shaman, an aged female called Vecca. We waited for an hour while she worked a cauldron brewing a potion. She was very grateful for our patience and offered us a herb root that works as a healing potion. She accepted no payment but requested that we bring her the fingers and toes of any giants we killed along with any plants that produced the root she gave us. She also gave us a small vial of a potion of Giant Strength that she had been brewing. I tucked that away for later use with the blessing of my companions. The Elves were tired so they went to rest in the quarters which we had been provided while I went with Krolan to meet with the local smith whom he had a good relationship with. The smith was called Ko’thuule and was making crossbow bolts. His work was crude so I gave him one of mine to model after for which he was thankful. We discussed smithing as all three of us have skills in that area. Krolan gave the smith his smithing tools so that he could produce weapons of greater quality. For this the smith gave Krolan an oversized dagger made of bone. The craftsmanship was exquisite in my view as I could never work with such material so well. The next day when we were preparing to set out the village came under attack by what were Gnolls of various classifications. The Dol’kal joined us in defending the southern gate, where we eventually prevailed. However it turned out that our gate was a diversion and the village was attacked from the north as well. Nearly a quarter of their population was killed by the attack. We brought a corpse of each type into the village for the Shaman to examine. She told us that there are rumours of the little ones being used to turn others into these creatures. That was good to know, however Scaro had brought in a heart from one of the creatures for her to examine.(I understand he has a habit of collecting body parts for alchemy) She saw the heart and banished Scaro until he could bring the head of the creature in command of the fiends to her. The heart was a Heart of Evil and he transgressed by bringing it into their village. We swore vengeance upon these creatures and took off after one that had fled to the east during our battle. Before we cleared the perimeter we encountered a hunting party returning who informed us that halfway between their village and Fort Providence were Sorrels, a creature that the people of BRI seek to tame. We followed the trail east until we came upon the corpse of the gnoll burned in a clearing. Krolan saw a large scaled and horned biped walking east. We followed at a distance all the way to the western side of the Copper Hills where the creature had gone into a cave with a pair of guard towers flanking it manned by Kobolds. Soon the creature came out, it looked much like a Dragon Man, not a dragonborn, but a giant Dragon Man. The being walked up the hills and soon disappeared over the ridge. We scouted the area and found a secret passage. Scaro and Cinder, the companion of Liana, scouted into the caves where they discovered a mine at least three levels high and at least 30 visible kobolds mining what appeared to be copper, silver, gems and sulfur. Being outnumbered we returned to Great Scale Village to share this information. I also sent a scroll to the Bard of Fort Providence, Heykitd to inform the people of the threat. The next day we headed north to scout the giant threat to both GSV and the BRI communities. We encountered another squad of Kobolds whom we wiped out. We found on them a message that stated: Travel South, take His orders and obey” written in draconic. This information leads us to believe that the Kobolds and whomever orders them are working with the Dragon Man. This does not bode well for the settlers of this area. A few hours later we finally encountered a pair of Hill Giants eating by a hill. Krolan attempted to parley with them but they eventually tried to eat him. Battle was enjoined and while we were focussing on the first giant something killed the other and vanished. Krolan is the only one who managed to see it but it killed the other giant with one blow. We checked the area and found a small amount of treasure. We also found the corpse of another giant who appeared to have been killed by the same disappearing being. We harvested the fingers and toes of the giants for Vacca, minus 7 fingers Scaro needed. On our return to the village we encountered a sign written in the goblin tongue that said simply, “Our Land”. Again information we felt needed to be passed along as this was only about a day and a half north of GSV. We Returned to the village and shared our tales. Vacca was grateful for our offerings, especially the hide Krolan managed to remove from the giant we managed to slay. Scaro headed back to Fort Providence along with Liana to share what we have learned. Krolan and I stayed behind as the Greatscale Lizardfolk welcomed us and offered to allow us to stay for a while. We will train and teach what we know of smithing and help fortifying the village for a while. Soon though we must fulfill our oath to kill the creature that controls the gnolls in the area. I don’t know if I will stay long beyond that oath but for now I am happy to have found a place where my disfigurement is accepted as normal. I will never return to Sanctus or the clan that abandoned me for my looks. 4/22/2018 0 Comments A Massacre at Great Scale Villageby Liana (Teri W.)Dear Mama and Papa,
I’m writing this letter in parts because I’m on an adventure and it looks like we’ll be away for a while. I am traveling with three companions Krolan, Scaro and Sigrunn. Our mission was to head north to scout for giants as they’d previously been seen in that area. Day One: We headed out on a nice spring morning and decided, after some traveling, to stop at the Great Scale village to rest up. The area was blooming all around us and the air was heavy but it was getting dark and in the wilds it can be dangerous to camp. We were given permission to enter the village and we found that they were equipped with swords, which they call Silver Stings. We asked to meet with the chieftain who is Dol’Kal. As we waited outside his house a shimmerscale male emerged and brushed past us. We told Dol’Kal our purpose and we asked to stay which he agreed to indicating they had built guesthouses using what they had learned from their visits to Fort Providence. We asked if there was anywhere in the village where we could get some healing potions and he directed us to their Great Shaman, Vecca. As we approached Vecca’s hut we heard her performing some sort of incantation so we decided to wait. After an hour she emerged and was very pleased with us. So much so she gave each of us the root to the Lizard’s Heart plant that heals like a potion but has longer shelf life. She also gave us a potion of Hill Giant Strength, which we all agree Sigrunn should keep and use. Vecca asked us, while we were in the wild, to bring her back some giants fingers and toes and some rare flesh. She explained this was from a large bipedal creature. We readily agreed. We went to the guesthouse and saw that they were built of wood and looked like the buildings in Fort Providence. Scaro and I were tired and decided to call it a night and Krolan and Sigrunn decided to visit the blacksmith. Day Two: The next morning we rose and then heard a warning horn. Knolls were coming up from the south and attacking the watchtowers. We all agreed to help and we fought alongside Dol’Kal and handily won the battle but upon returning to the village we learned that the knolls we killed were only a scouting party and the main force had come through and attacked the village. Males, females and children’s bodies lay on the ground. We learned that a quarter of the village inhabitants had been killed. During the fight Scaro had taken the heart of the largest enemy and we collected his glave. We also took a body of one of each type of knoll to show Vecca. Upon entering her hut she looked at Scaro asking why he had brought such evil into their village. It was the heart. He was banished from the village until he could vanquish the source of the evil. She also looked at the glave we had collected and as she read the engraving I had a flash back and was able to understand the Abyssal. The name of the blade was “Bloodfinder”. It had a black aura around it and we agreed to leave it with Vecca. She had another one and put them both together for safekeeping. After a short rest we decided after much discussion to head east to track down a knoll that had run away from our fight and to find the source of the evil so Scaro could get back in the Great Scales good graces. As we traveled, we avoided a giant constrictor snake and as we continued to move east we smelled burned flesh. Krolan and Cinder stealthed forward and found the knoll burned to death. Krolan saw a huge horned creature walking away carrying an enormous sword heading for the copper hills. We decided to track the creature thinking it could lead us to the source. We continued to track the creature from very far back and eventually it led us to a cave at the foot of the copper hills. There were two guard towers each manned by a kobold. Then, to our amazement, a massive creature that was half dragon with red scales emerged from the cave. We retreated to get out of sight and it walked east off the side of the copper hills. Day Three: We discussed entering the cave but instead decide to scout around the back to see if there was another entrance that wasn’t guarded. Scaro and Cinder squeezed through a crevice and we learned there were 30 kobold inside that they could see mining silver, copper and gems. There was a discussion on whether we should go in and kill the kobolds. Scaro thought we could take them but we agreed we didn’t have the right party makeup and decided to leave and return better prepared. Day Four: We decided to go look for giants and on our way ran into a party of 12 kobolds. We defeated them and found a note on which was written “Travel south. Take his orders. Obey.” We all agreed we needed to warn Fort Providence. We eventually found two giants and Krolon tried his best to convince them we were not food but they vehemently disagreed and attacked Krolon. We fought them concentrating our attacks on the biggest one when suddenly the smaller one was cleaved in half by a creature that only Krolon saw before it just disappeared. We killed the big giant and while investigating the body of the smaller one I blew out a vein in my left eye and now am blinded. I’ve been assured it will heal up in a month. Day Five to Seven: We traveled and arrived safely back to the Great Scale village but on the way we encountered a sign directly north of the village written in Goblin. I decided to stay in the village assisting with hunting and rebuilding. Sigrunn asked the Great Scale to send a runner with the warning to Fort Providence. We all agreed Heykitd would be the best person to spread the word. I will write more when I can. I love and miss you all. Liana 4/21/2018 0 Comments Firestorm, HiddenBy HeyKitD (Sarah C.)Late the same night of Merelda's rescue, Heykitd wandered into Hamilton's. He told Zorak, "I need a boat for a very special mission". Zorak was concerned for his friend and although he was bloodied and exhausted he insisted he had to go as well. "No Zorak this mission is mine alone". He unsheathed Firestorm and Zorak instantly recognized the urgency of the matter. This blade will be in a place of sanctuary. It will be hidden away by the ones that would never use it in battle. Zorak and Namfoodle know of this place. Where Koltalon and I first quarreled. The place of safety, and sanctuary. When an elf worthy of Koltalon's legacy steps forward, you will know he or she is the one to yield this great blade. Then and only then will it be safe to reveal the location of Firestorm. 4/10/2018 0 Comments A Call to Armsby HEYKITD (Sarah C.)If we are mark’d to die, we are now
To do our country loss; and if to live, The fewer men, the greater share of honour. God’s will! I pray thee, wish not one man more. By Love, I am not covetous for gold, Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost; It yearns me not if men my garments wear; Such outward things dwell not in my desires. But if it be a sin to covet honour, I am the most offending soul alive. No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from Scantus. God’s peace! I would not lose so great an honour As one man more methinks would share from me For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more! Rather proclaim it, Koltalon, through my host, That he which hath no stomach to this fight, Let him depart; his passport shall be made, And crowns for convoy put into his purse; We would not die in that man’s company That fears his fellowship to die with us. This day is call’d the feast of Merelda. He that outlives this day, and comes safe home, Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam’d, And rouse him at the name of Merelda. He that shall live this day, and see old age, Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours, And say ‘To-morrow is the day we rescued Merelda.’ Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars, And say ‘These wounds I had on Merelda's rescue day.’ Old mven forget; yet all shall be forgot, But he’ll remember, with advantages, What feats he did that day. Then shall our names, Familiar in his mouth as household words- Koltalon the the monk, Brea and Jerwin, Kellen and Zorak, Bennie, Scaro and Liam. Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb’red. This story shall the good man teach his son; And this day shall ne’er go by, From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remembered- We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition; And gentlemen in Scantus now-a-bed Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon this day. |
