12/7/2017 0 Comments The Kenku & "Human Problem"by Mindartis Siannodel (Michael d.) 7 Spring FellTL:DR: Mindartis and company encounter kenku with great disdain for humans. I must find new living quarters soon. Quarion would laugh at me were he to see my current residence, but it is the only room available in this abominable place. The locals are diligently working to improve the town and furnish once abandoned structures after clearing them of the undead. After examining their woodworking “skills”, I do not have much hope something appropriate for myself will be livable anytime soon. At least I have my books to keep me company until then. I do miss decent food, though. I’d gladly pay a king’s ransom for a decent glass of miruvórë, but only got blank stares when I asked the innkeep. He was stupidly proud of a dish that he presented instead, apparently made out of snake meat. I didn’t touch it, unsure if he was trying to poison me or not. Salazar the giant lizardfolk was again recruiting people to head out and clear more of the town. He wanted to secure a path so he cou;d contact a local tribe of birdpeople he called the “Kenku”. From their description, I had initially thought they were related to the aarakocra, but now I’m not so sure. He did mention that one of the routes to the enclave was blocked by a giant wall of reanimates, which caught my attention. It sounded like these kenku have some kind of control over the undead. If so, this could be monumental to my work! I wouldn’t have to rely on these half-baked adventures to continue my studies anymore. I volunteered to join the party and was joined by a half-orc bard and a dwarven barbarian who seemed to have a long history with Salazar. Both dimwitted, but congenial enough. Two half-elves, another bard who seemed intent on “making friends with everyone” and a druid. I kept my distance from the overly-friendly bard, but the druid made for a pleasant traveling companion. I find the druidic magic quite interesting. He cast a protective ward over me that granted my skin bark-like properties, though seemed to have the side effect of creating leaves in my hair. Not perfect, but it helped tremendously. We set out towards the obelisk following the path we had cleared a few days before with the half-orc (Thrugg) playing an awful racket on an accordion. No sooner had we arrived (during the dark, who’s foolish idea was that?!) then we were set upon by a pack of wolves, no doubt unamused by Thrugg’s “marching song”. The bard (Theobold I believe his name is) immediately tried making friends with them! I swear , if this half-elf gets me killed, I want someone to place a curse on his family. I’ll have to send a letter to Quarion to see if he will prepare one. Of course the half-elf’s plan didn’t work, so we quietly readied what spells and weapons we had and prepared to attack. The dwarf (Dwain? Dwemer? It’s hard to keep their names or faces straight) got it into his head that it would be best to start yelling and screaming at the wolves to scare them into submission. We were surely doomed. But, miracles of miracles, the wolves took his threat seriously, turned tail, and ran. I kid you not, the sight of ten wolves disappearing into the gloom is one I will not forget.
Our way cleared, we continued past the obelisk (with Theobold scribbling a few notes as we passed by. I’ll have to spend some time with him later studying this object) and found ourselves in front of a giant wall blocking our path. A few houses stood in front of it, but seemed to be locked. We spent too much time squabbling over how best to proceed, before Salazar took the initiative and scrambled up the wall, with the rest of us quickly following. What a site we had at the top! These kenku have magics available to them beyond my ken. Their structures comprised of geodesic shapes I have not seen used in architecture before and all give off light, giving the area the presence of daytime. While we gaped at the sight, a large band of kenku approached us, considerably angry that we had breached their defenses. Their leader, an individual by the name of Regan, demanded that we relinquish our weapons and come down from the wall. Not wanting to debase myself any further than this “adventure” already had, I cast Feather Fall on myself so I could gracefully descend. This seemed to greatly excite the kenku who admitted a deep desire to be able to fly. So maybe not related to the arrakocra who, according to lore, have already accomplished aerial mastery. I offered to teach them the simple cantrip in exchange for knowledge, but they seemed uninterested after learning the limitations of my spell. Sadly, the kenku were a bit of a disappointment. They expressed a great disdain for humans, even asking us to eradicate them all for them. They didn’t seem to know much about the land, other than claiming ownership over it and a mention of humans raiders nearby causing them problems. They also claimed the undead didn’t bother them, but were vague on exactly why. I suspect they were being cagey and think they know more than they were letting on. Perhaps if I curry favor with them, they will let me in on their secrets of the reanimate. With a promise to them that we’d deal with their “human problem”, we were rather rudely escorted to the gate. There, we met two idiot guards who seemed keen on the idea of us collecting human scalps for them. One of the morons even had a scalp hat he proudly showed us. We started heading back to the inn, but two ice creatures ensnared us in fog within site of the gate. One would think the guards would have come to our aid, but, fools that they were, they sat put. With no small thanks to my ingenious placement of a few fire bolts, we made short work of the creatures., but at quite a cost. Their frost magic was quite formidable and caused me to short amount of injury. Thankfully, my companions were able to patch me and themselves up, and we headed home. We did hear screams and cries of a werewolf as we approached the tavern, but we ran in without encountering the beast. Salazar speculated it might reside on a nearby ship and be commanding the wolves, but is of little concern to me. So, no further study of the undead but the encounter with the kenku might be a stepping stone to further revelations. The surrounding area is still teeming with reanimates as well, so perhaps I convince another party to preserve one for me. I feel so close to a break through, but lack tangible information!
