9/5/2017 0 Comments Lumbering onby glin ybendawien droat (Kep a.) 6-9 ss(8 days before arrival) I have arrived at the port for my journey to Black River Island. I attempted to get confirmation that I would be allowed on board by presenting a letter written by Boremar explaining the substitution of his presence, but I could not find anyone that would even acknowledge that there was even a passenger manifest, much less that such confirmation from authority was necessary for me to board a ship. All the easier for me without the stress of being possibly denied passage. While settling down for my last night on Sanctus, a young wood elf caught me asking a toad about the weather and we struck up a conversation. Apparently he had traveled with the same caravan as me once or twice and I had forgotten, once again the presence of a solitary gnome is more memorable. Him and his companions will be looking for a new source of lumber and are willing to let me accompany them, at least for a short while, for what help I can offer. 6th of Springswell I’ve been on this ship for 6 days now surrounded by folk of all types. Many adventurers surprisingly eager to charge into the unknown, undoubtedly for at least a few it will be to their doom. Some of my compatriots seem to have confused me for a deckhand and I believe at least one assumed I was a stowaway right before he assured me that my secret was safe with him. I may not look like most of the others on this ship, but I would have guess that more of them could recognise a collage wizard when they saw one. No matter, I’m not here to raise research funds. Sea travel is not kind to my constitution, but I have managed to find a way to read while in a hammock that minimizes the motion of the waves. I was lucky enough to find a tomb with records of an encounter with some natives of the island, the bullywugs. Fascinating creatures, but if I ever have the chance to see one, it is probably a bad day. 7th of Springswell We’ve landed! The new arrivals we greeted by a Dougal Ainsley, a oversized human with a jaded look, but capable enough given the conditions. I spent the remaining hours of the day investigating the settlement and surrounding area. Most of the new arrivals later gathered in galley for food and drink, song and dance. There was even an unexpectedly marvelous performance by a young halfling maden. She was followed by an obviously better known elven bard that gave a… let’s say adequate performance. I’m sure he would have been more impressive if my musical tastes weren’t so recently elevated by the petite savant. With my spirits lifted, I was finally able to realize that Master Boremar was days out of earshot and no one here was my superior, officially speaking. I grasped the moment and successfully built up the courage to indulge. For the first time in my extended adolescent life, I ordered, paid for, and drank my own beer. What little flavor it had was repulsive, but it soon warmed my gullet enough that it did not matter. Halfway through my pint of independence, a silver haired halfling next to me struck up conversation. It was mostly small talk, but I do remember her name was Praba and she warned me about traveling west where many fishers have gone missing. 8th of Springswell We awoke in the communal sleeping area that was quickly re-configured back into the dining hall. After a hearty breakfast I met my new elvish friend and his companions. Another wood elf and to my surprise, the petite musical savant. I quickly learned her name was Shaena Tosscobble and that she is apparently much more than just a musician. We rented a couple canoes and headed up the river to the north then east for several miles. The bugs were swarming so I let Vespertilio out to feast. He seemed quite happy. While we were stopped for lunch and were interrupted by two giant frogs that didn’t hesitate to attack us! I was hoping to be on this island at least a few days before such an encounter. One of these beasts actually wrapped its tongue around little Shaena! She managed to escape before being consumed and the four of us together managed to scare off the bloated amphibians. We finished our break and continued on foot until dusk. We made camp and started a watch cycle, but before long Shaena woke us with a frightful tune. Bullywugs! I not only saw my first one, but two of them attacked us! We were able to dispatch them quick enough, but then... from the distance... we heard more bullywugs, many more. (Session on 2017/9/19: Craig as GM, Kep as Glin Ybendawien Droat, Lisa as Shaena Tosscobble, Jacob as Lindir Baelath Mitore, Michael as Tharrus.) As the croaking got louder and more aggressive, we had to make a choice, stay and fight, or flee. It wasn’t a hard decision, we ran. Luckily, our path of escape was on solid ground, and with some melodic encouragement, we were able to outrun them. Once we were at a safe distance, Vespertilio did a sweep of the area. The Bullywugs were gone, but he spotted two large creatures. They were lizards. They had four legs, and a wondrous display of feathers covering their rear half. The colors of the feathers ranged from black at the mid section to dazzling array of blues and greens. They were both consuming some local flora, the leaves and small branches a young tree. The rest of the party wanted to take a closer look, but I had risked being food for the locals enough for the day and kept my distance. Tharrus and Lindir attempted to get close the beasts, but didn’t manage to touch them. Once we gathered once more, Shaena called them “Sorrels” and insisted that they could be ridden like a horse. Herbivores or not, that seems unlikely. Even if they are intelligent enough to be trained, they are still purly wild and may not even be strong enough to carry a rider. I’m sure they would no problem tossing me around like one of those branches, but the weight of a fully armored human may just break the poor lizard’s spine. Despite the obvious challenges, Shaena remains excessively enthusiastic. While she was rambling about the prospects of charging through the swamp on the back of an oversized reptile, the wood elves found that this area was full of suitable trees for lumber production. With our mission complete, Lindir scaled a tall oak to scout and we eventually made our way back to the main branch of the Black River, Lindir marking our route on trees as we traveled. Leaving the canoes to be retrieved later, we crossed a small tributary on foot, got a ride with some fishers, and then arrived back at the tavern. We have found a source of lumber, but the retrieval would be a lot easier without the constant threat of bullywug attack. A war shouldn’t be started just because they live next to some natural resources. Successfully negotiating with the tribe is a more favorable outcome, despite their brutal reputation. Such efforts would be greatly aided by the ability to communicate with them, so perhaps we should find someone that speaks both common and bullywug. 11th of Springswell Having successful survived my first excursion into the swamp, I have found this recommended set of equipment to be intolerably cumbersome. For the average human this may be acceptable, but my pack is almost twice the size and weight of myself. There must be a better way, and as a wizard, I will find it. I have retired to my room for research with hopes that my next excursion will be with accoutrements more appropriate to someone of my small stature.
