I have met some wonderful folk in a lovely tavern on this “Black River Island” who have agreed to allow me to interact with a Queen Bee. We have all agreed that the best course of action here is to be diplomatic and disguise the main goal of creating hives for a meadery as expanding the Queen’s “Queendom”. I was very excited to have found an old dear friend, Chat, in the tavern as well. What a lovely surprise. We will be leaving on our journey soon. What follows is my documentation on the local fauna and flora we discover on our trip. My goal is to be able to become a guide for these wild lands as I discover it, and to provide an insight to the surroundings so that others might also find joy in these lands as I do.
From Black River Tavern due East, approximately 1-5 miles.
Thick, dense vegetation, not unlike the bayou due north of the Tavern. The air is thick, heavy with dampness and the smell of degrading flora. The coastline is more a wetland with a smattering of trees. I can see that there are heavy rainfalls in the afternoon that push debris out of the bayou. Wildlife in this area for myself is uncharted. Note: talk to the locals to get a feel for the lovely creatures that might reside within.
From Black River Tavern due East, mile 5, approximately.
The bayou has slowly turned into a more normal coast line, including beautiful sandy beaches, seagulls and typical birds of paradise. I did see an anomaly, however. There were 3 nesting pairs of rather large birds. These birds had large flat bills and long legs, not unlike some birds I have heard of in lore from the dark days. I can tell the water is bountiful with fish, as one birds, likely a male, entered the water to about 3 feet, dunked his head and clearly had a suitable quantity of fish in his bill. Note: Establish contact, decide on a name to call these birds. Learn to fish.
From Black River Tavern due East approximately 10 miles
We have reached the location that the fisherman states there might be bees. On this beautiful day, I can see a plethora of wildlife. Common birds of the sea are here finding bountiful food. Still need to learn to fish. I am thinking net fishing for intelligence of the coast line and to see what lurks beyond the edges of the shore. In front, a 50ft Dune. As I crested the dune, I saw a the most incredible oasis I have ever seen, 0.5 miles N-S lay in front of me, and 1.0 miles E-W of beautiful palms, orchids and an incredible amount of buzzing insects and birds of paradise. I established contact with a parrot, and found that there has been nothing strange in the oasis, and that the bee hive lay due north. As the team prepared to venture forth I found an incredible 10 Coconuts! I heard a huge buzzing noise, then turned around, and then darkness. My team informed me that I had been impaled by a giant wasp. I was fortunate to have such lovely company who revived me from my convulsive mess and defeat the evil wasp. Note: Wasps are evil and quite powerful. They contain poison which I would like to explore more of later when better equipped.
After a short period, we established contact with the bees and made our way to the hive. A plant of strategy, as I am calling it, rests beneath the hive. As we tried to establish contact with the Queen, the plant made an attempt to lure our companion, Kohanu, into the center of its gaping maw. After stepping back, he stated that the puff of poison ejected from its stamen has a hallucinogenic effect on elves at least. We established contact and the Queen agreed to come with us. As we formulated and executed a plan to safely get the Queen down, we had a conflict with the plant. We have learned that this plant can not only move to attack, it has an acidic center that very quickly decomposes its victims, alive or dead. We managed to recover both of our comrades from the plant and effectively ended its reign on the clearing. The lizard I had spoken to earlier was not much help with the plant, though did mention that the nest of the wasps was due east. If any are willing to go to the wasps, please let me know, as I would like to gain the poison for study. They can be found 10 miles East of the Tavern, 30 minute walk North of the coastline, through the Oasis to the bees hive and due East from there, as our intelligence Pippen described. If you see a female lizard nearby, send her to the glen so that Pippen may have a chance to start a clutch. Send him my regards.
We returned uneventfully to the shore with our bounty and all almost unscathed, though several of us did fall unconscious. Merle caught a swordfish which was worth 3GP back at the main hub so let it be known that there are some rather large fish to be had! Pay your respects for their sacrifices.
Until my next venture from the tavern….
