by Noric Synphase (Beau W.)TL;DR: Adventurers break open the second sylvan obelisk in Black River Swamp and recover a mithral blade (one of four). See Obelisks of the Bayou So, the story starts off with a healthy band of adventures that decide to head West in search of the Obelisk they found a short while ago. We needed some experienced fighters on our side for the dangers that we could be facing, and we ventured out in search of knowledge and treasure. The perilous journey Westward began shortly after they traveled about a day. Our warriors are ambushed by a small group of 6 or so lizard folk. As the battle raged on, the party was able to dispatch the raiding party, while knocking 2 unconscious. Because I can speak their language, I find out that their way of fighting is of honor and for “Their King”. We as the group tried to see if there was a way to get an audience with the leader, the two warriors said that (Roughly translated) “since we do not speak for our group of people, our king will not hear your words, because your words hold no weight”… more or less. After a bit of talking, we find out that WE have disgraced them by not killing them in battle. In order to appease their own “honor code”, we challenged them to a one-on-one battle to the death. Because we are here to tell this story, you now know that battle was ours! The adventures move farther into the woods avoiding the problems near the shore and the birds that could possibly pound us into the sandy beach. We avoided the encounter all together and started heading North to the Obelisk. After a short walk, we find the obelisk and proceed to devise a way to open the door without triggering the spire. At this point, we have no idea how the spire is triggered which made the next hour-long discussion fun and intriguing. With some brilliant planning and expert stonecutter knowledge we were able to attach ropes to the door, placing large poles that we dug into the ground and in a “pully style” method, we as the group were able to open the door. Oh, what a small but joyous victory this was. Once the door was cracked open, we were able to get inside the room. It is now known that these temples have glowing glyphs all along the walls and around the floor leading to a circle that was a mix of dust, chalk and metal powder. This safety mechanism was on the floor near the door. It looked like it was the fail-safe, if anyone were to enter this space, the huge door would destroy the circle on the floor at the base of the stone door, triggering the spire to stop entry to the main part of the structure. Sooooo, to be careful not to disturb the magic circle that was directly in front of the huge stone door, we placed large stones around the delicate ward and proceeded to lower the door down the rest of the way carefully to not disturb the magic circle.
This was not easy by any stretch of the manner or light by any means. To be honest, we were BARELY able to lower the decent of the massive door. With the ropes we were able to slow its decent to the floor and have it land on the rocks. We wanted to save the door and not damage it. This did not matter, the door cracked in half because of the sheer mass and weight of the stone, thankfully not disturbing the circle. Now inside the temple of sorts, we proceeded to figure out how to open the door to the large hole. It was a bit of brain power, determination and skill of all that made it possible to put this puzzle in the correct order, opening the magical door where by the spires magic stopped and proceeded to fall through the hole, slamming onto the floor 100’ below. The spire hit the floor below so hard that it felt like it shook me to my very core. My goodness that was loud. We knew from a previous encounter with a place similar to this one, we may be fighting undead, and we were correct. We descend quickly by rope and our monk in the lead was able to catch the first arrow shot at him, preventing damage even before we had the chance to get into battle. The battle begun with two more arrows striking our monk and a dozen zombies circling the party on the South side of the fallen Obelisk. To Battle!!! Once I Noric, the messenger of Freya put my first foot on the battlefield, I let out a holy battle cry, turning more than half of the zombies that were circling the monk. The gods were on our side this day. Though it was stacked against our favor at the start, we quickly assessed the battle and destroyed the “White” in just a few rounds. Oh what a glorious death I, Noric delivered onto the White!! Freya gave me the privilege of delivering the killing blow to such an unsightly creature. After the death of the leader, we managed to finish the zombies in quick order, cared for the wounded and collected the spoils of war. We return to the tavern to speak of these adventures, and how glorious those adventures were!
